#13 Women's Soccer to Host adidas Invitational

Wake Forest women??s soccer will host the adidas Invitational this coming weekend, September 13-15 at Spry Stadium. The tournament will feature #13 Wake Forest (5-0), along with Loyola Marymount (3-0), #20 USC (1-2-1) and Vanderbilt (3-1). Friday??s games with match up USC against Vanderbilt and Wake against Loyola Marymount at 7:30. Sunday??s matches pair up Loyola Maryount and Vanderbilt at 11:00 am and the Deacs against USC at 1:00 pm.
Deacs Survive Wildcats
Wake Forest remained undefeated at 5-0 as they survived the Wildcats of Davidson, 3-1. The victory continues the Deacs' expectations of a perfect non-conference season. Davidson appeared first on the board with Leigh Anne Hoskins scoring off of a corner kick at the 15:27 mark from Tara Maloney. The Deacs tied up the game on a header from A.B. Robbins, assisted by Gabi Lieb. The score at the half was 1-1.
Sarah Kozey's offensive efforts shined in the second half as she took seven shots and scored the game-winning goal on assists from Alena Thom and Katherine Winstead. Thom also contributed to the Deacs' victory, scoring a goal at the 80:12 mark.
Wake Forest's defense held Davidson to eight shots for the game, while goalkeeper Kenna Healy tallied three saves. Wake Forest continues to outshoot its opponents, totaling 26 shots on the night. The Deacs had 13 shots on goal to four from the Wildcats.
Loyola Marymount Lions
The Lions of Loyola Marymount come to the adidas Invitational undefeated at 3-0. No opponent has scored against Loyola Marymount this season. The Lions have shutout victories over San Jose St (4-0), San Diego St. (1-0) and Loyola-Chicago (3-0). The Lions will face the Deacs in their first road game of the season.
Southern California Women of Troy
The twentieth-ranked Women of Troy travel to Wake Forest after beginning the season at 1-2-1. The Women of Troy fell to Wisconsin 1-0, and North Carolina 2-0. After two loses, the Women of Troy received their first win of the season against Penn State, 1-0. Southern Cal tied with Virginia,0-0, on September 8.
With Honors
Junior midfielder Katherine Winstead received two weekly honors for her performances during the week of Sept. 3-8. She was tabbed co-ACC Player of the Week along with North Carolina junior forward Alyssa Ramsey on Monday, September 9. Winstead was placed on Soccer America??s Team of the Week on Sept. 11.
Winstead led Wake Forest to wins over Elon and Georgia, guiding the Deacs to a perfect 2-0 record for the week. Against the Phoenix, the Raleigh, NC native took five shots and tallied one goal and one assists. Winstead also scored the first two goals of the game and assisted the game-winning goal against the Bulldogs.
Breaking Records
Junior Alena Thom tallied three assists against Elon, setting a single-game record in that category. The record was previously held by Katherine Winstead with two assists against Tulane on October 12, 2001.
Senior Joline Charlton is also looking to break several records this season. She currently is in second in season points (24) and shots (71), third in goals (10) and fourth (7) in assists. In career records, Charlton ranks fourth in goals (20), points (53) and shots (146).
The Deacs vs. Opponents
Wake Forest has dominated the field this season, leading their opponents in every category. The Deacs have outshot opponents 106-31, including 60shots on goal to their opponents?? 14. Wake has scored 16 goals on the season and only allowed three. The Deacs have held opponents to six points while tallying 42. Wake has recorded 16 assists on the season as well.

Poll Appearances
After starting the season 5-0, the Wake Forest women's soccer team has climbed the NSCAA poll and is currently ranked 13th. The Deacs debuted in the first poll of the season at 16th, which was released on September 2, 2002.
Wake Forest also broke into several polls this week after defeating Elon 5-0 and Georgia 3-1. The Deacs appear in Soccer Buzz at 18th, Soccer Times at 21st and Soccer America at 25th.
Injury Report Senior Lindsey Griffin is out for the rest of the season due to a knee injury. She will receive a medical redshirt and return to competition next season for the Deacs.
Up Next: Maryland Terrapins Wake Forest remains at home to face the Maryland Terrapins, Friday Septmeber 21 at 7:00 pm. The match-up will be the first conference game for the Deacs.
Getting To Spry Stadium At the I-40/Business-40 split, take Business-40 towards downtown Winston-Salem. Take the Cherry Street exit and proceed north through the downtown area. Cherry Street then becomes University Parkway. Continue past Joel Coliseum on the right and then bear left at the fork in the road. Approximately one mile past the Coliseum, take the Polo Road exit and make a left turn on Polo Road. Spry Stadium will be 1/2 mile ahead on the left. Turn left onto campus at the stoplight and take the first road to the right to access the parking lot. No parking pass is necessary.
