WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- The Soccer America weekly poll was released on Monday night and for just the third time in school history, Wake Forest is ranked in top five. The Demon Deacons check in at number five, behind perennial powers Stanford, UCLA, St. John's and Connecticut.
Wake Forest, ranked 13th last week by the publication, improved its stock with win over sixth-ranked Virginia over the weekend. For the Deacons, it was their first win over the Cavaliers since 1991.
The Demon Deacons were ranked in the top five during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. They peaked at number three in November of 1999.
Wake Forest will put its unbeaten 3-0-1 record and top five ranking on the line this week in a pair of difficult road tests. The first of which is Wednesday at Richmond. On Saturday night, the Deacons have a showdown with third-ranked St. John's. That game will be the grand opening of the Red Storm's new Belson Soccer Stadium.
Six of the ACC's seven schools that sponsor men's soccer are ranked in the top 25. Wake Forest is the highest of three in the top ten.
