Women's Soccer Ready to Extinguish the Phoenix

Wake Forest (2-0) heads to Elon, NC to take on Elon (1-0), Tuesday, September 3 at 4:00 p.m. in a non-conference match-up of the regular season. The Demon Deacons participated in the Florida State Nike Invitational Tournament this past weekend, beating Pac-10 members, Oregon and Oregon State. The Phoenix defeated Rider University on August 30 in their first game of the season.
Just Do It
In their first action of the season, Wake Forest traveled to Talahassee, FL to participate in the Florida State Nike Invitational. The Deacs won the tournament, as they shutout the Oregon Ducks, 3-0 and the Oregon State Beavers, 2-1.
The first game matched the Deacs against the Oregon Ducks. Freshman Sarah Kozey connected on an assist from Sarah Creighton to put the Deacs up 1-0 at the half. Wake tallied five shots in the first half while Oregon took four.
Wake goalie Erin Regan stopped scoring efforts by the Ducks twice in the game, while Oregon??s goalkeeper, Sarah Peters, tallied five saves.
During the second half, the Deacs attempted 12 shots and converted two into goals. A.B. Robbins and Sara Creighton scored with assists by Alli Hunt and Katie Johnson. Sarah Kozey totaled four shots for the game, while Katherine Winstead and Melanie Schneider had two apiece. Creighton, along with Alli Hunt and Joline Charlton each had a shot at the net.
The Deacs faced Oregon State in their second game of the tournament. Wake??s first goal came at the 30:08 mark of the first half as Sarah Kozey lofted the ball over a crowd of defensive players to Alena Thom, who sent the ball in the net.
During the second half, Katie Johnson connected on an assist from Sarah Kozey to put the Deacs up 2-0. The Beavers didn??t answer the Deacs?? offensive efforts until the 63:15 mark with a goal by Stacey Mescher, assisted by Jillian Nicks.
Oregon State??s goalkeeper, Jo Fletcher had five saves for the match, while Wake goalie Erin Regan had none.
Wake Forest??s offense dominated the game as the Deacs took 18 shots, including 12 in the second half, while Oregon State only had four. Wake also tallied seven corner kicks to Oregon State??s one.
Elon Phoenix
The Elon Phoenix (1-0, 0-0) defeated the Rider Broncos in their season opener on Friday, August 30. Junior Kate Schabo netted the first two goals of the game for the Phoenix. Elon??s Kelly Williams scored a third goal at the 28:50 mark of the first half with assists from Erin Gaeng and Laura Fogg. The final goal of the contest went to Kate Schabo with help from Jessica Mills. The final result was Elon 5, Rider 2.
Elon looks to returning to the Big South championship game as their main goal of the season. Coach Paul Webster believes this Phoenix squad possesses a combination of speed and strength.
Returning for the Phoneix this season are offensive standouts Katie Schabo (four goals, four assists in 2001) and Laura Fogg (two goals, two assists). Midfielders Jessica Mills (four goals, one assist) and Natalie Sampson (two assists), along with attackers Erin Gaeng and Vicki Robella complete the offensive attack. The defense is led by Marlo Wooden, Denise Rogers, Angela Beckett and Shelley Stenzel.
The Phoenix face another grueling schedule this season, however Coach Webster believes the challenge will help Elon return to the NCAA Collegiate Cup.
Lots of Firsts
Freshman Sarah Kozey scored her first goal a a Demon Deacon Friday night against the Oregon Ducks in the Florida State Nike Invitational. The goal came at the mark of first half and was one of three goals in the shutout victory. Kozey also had her first assist as a Deacon this past weekend against Oregon State.
Scoring their first goals of the season were A.B. Robbins, Sara Creighton, Katie Johnson and Alena Thom. Both Robbins and Creighton scored against Oregon, while Johnson and Thom chipped in one apiece against Oregon State.
Records Watch
The 2002 season could be a record-breaking year as a couple of Demon Deacons are climbing their way up the charts.

In the Net
Returning in the net is fifth year senior, Erin Regan who holds every goalkeeping record at Wake Forest. Her impressive stats last season included logging 1794 minutes in the net, allowing only 23 goals for a 1.15 goals-against average, and tallying 4.5 shutouts in the 2001 season. "Erin Regan's performance will be most critical to our success. As a fifth year senior, Erin must lead us on and off the field if we are going to be successful," stated da Luz. "She is a former ACC first teamer and potential All-American at her position. Her ability was recognized when she was invited into National Team Training Camp last spring. She was inspired by the whole experience and wants more."
Up Next Wake Forest will face Southeastern conference member Georgia on Thursday, September 6 at 7:00. The match up will be the first home game of the season for the Deacs and will take place at Spry Stadium.
Getting To Spry Stadium At the I-40/Business-40 split, take Business-40 towards downtown Winston-Salem. Take the Cherry Street exit and proceed north through the downtown area. Cherry Street then becomes University Parkway. Continue past Joel Coliseum on the right and then bear left at the fork in the road. Approximately one mile past the Coliseum, take the Polo Road exit and make a left turn on Polo Road. Spry Stadium will be 1/2 mile ahead on the left. Turn left onto campus at the stoplight and take the first road to the right to access the parking lot. No parking pass is necessary.
