The third-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team notched a 3-0 win over visiting UNC Greensboro on Wednesday night at Spry Stadium. It was the fourth consecutive win for the Deacons over the Spartans and the victory keeps the team undefeated in 2002.
In the 19th minute, Bobby Gehring opened the scoring for Wake Forest (5-0-2) with his first goal of the season. His shot from 10 yards out followed one-touches from Vicente Bastidas and Scott Sealy who were both credited with assists on the play.
In the second half, the Deacons poured in on thanks to a pair of freshman. The second goal came after Amir Lowery won the ball on the endline and slipped it to Bastidas who found freshman Justin Moose. The Statesville, N.C., native beat the keeper for his third of the season, giving Wake Forest a commanding two-goal lead at the 51:31 mark.
Later, in the 71st minute, freshman Ryan Alexander put the icing on the cake. Gehring, who scored the first goal, lined a pass behind the Spartan defense. Alexander ran onto it, shed a UNCG defender and slid a ball into the lower right corner to cap the scoring.
Goalkeeper William Hesmer needed to make just two saves before giving way to senior Brad McEachern for the final 11 minutes. The two keepers combined for the shutout, the team's second in the last three games.
Wake Forest outshot UNC Greensboro by a 10-9 margin in a game that was statistically even in virtually every category except goals.
Wednesday's win sets the stage for Friday's showdown with ACC rival Maryland. The Terrapins bring a 8-1 record and number four national ranking into the contest. Kickoff at Spry Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
