The Wake Forest women's soccer team was victorious on the road against Elon, shutting out the Phoenix 5-0. The win leaves the Deacs undefeated as they approach their first home game at Spry Stadium.
Wake Forest dominated the field for the entire game, with two goals coming in the first half and the rest in the second. Alena Thom led Wake's scoring efforts with two goals. Katie Johnson, Katherine Winstead and Gabi Lieb each contributed to the shutout as well.
The first Demon Deacon goal came at the 11:47 mark of the first half by Thom, with help from Alli Hunt and Sarah Kozey. After a kick-in by Johnson, the score was 2-0, ending the first period of action. Thom scored again in the second half, along with Winstead at the 55:24 mark and Lieb at the 88:52 mark.
The Deacs out shot the Phoenix 28-3, with Thom and Winstead having five a piece. Sarah Kozey and Sarah Creighton totaled four shots, while Johnson and Lieb had three. Melanie Schneider took two shots for the game and A.B. Robbins and Joline Charlton had one each.
"We definitely finished better than we started. Our fitness ability told the story in the second half and we are continuing to get goals from different players," stated Coach da Luz. "Elon was a good opponent and was able to pull us offside more than we expected."
Wake Forest will be matched up next against Georgia, Friday, September 6 at 7:00. The game will be the Deacs first showing at Spry Stadium of the season.
