GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest junior goalkeeper William Hesmer was named Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Hesmer, a native of Wilson, N.C., and graduate of Wilson High School, earned the recognition after leading the Demon Deacons to a perfect 2-0 record this past week with a 3-0 win UNC Greensboro and another 3-0 victory over fourth-ranked Maryland.
Hesmer did not allow a goal in 169:08 minutes of play and recorded eight saves on the week. Against the Terrapins, the ACC's top goal scoring team, Hesmer registered six saves and was credited with the shutout.
Approaching the halfway point of the season, Hesmer leads all ACC goalkeepers with a 0.59 goals against average. He has surrendered just five goals in more 769 minutes of action.
The victory over Maryland improved Wake Forest's record to 6-0-2 and a perfect 2-0 league mark for the first time since 1991.
Wake Forest hosts William & Mary on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. and plays NC State at the SAS Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C., on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
