Unbeaten Deacons Hit the Road to Face Old Dominion
- The 16th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team ventures into the Commonwealth of Virginia on Saturday to play Old Dominion University. Kickoff in Norfolk is set for 7:00 p.m. The Demon Deacons are fresh off a solid weekend in Chapel Hill at the UNC Classic where they tied 11th-ranked Saint Louis and defeated a talented Akron squad, 2-1.
- Saturday's game with the Monarchs will be the final tuneup before the Deacons open their Atlantic Coast Conference schedule on September 14 at home against top-ranked UVa.
Series History with Old Dominion
- The Deacons and Monarchs have met seven times on the soccer field with Wake Forest taking victories in six of those contests. The most recent meeting was last year at Spry Stadium, a 3-0 win for Wake Forest. Brian Carroll scored two goals while Jeremiah White tacked on another. James Riley assisted on both Carroll goals. The Deacons outshot the Monarchs 16-7.
- Wake Forest has won the last five meetings, four of which have been shutouts. The last time Old Dominion posted a victory was in the 1987 game in Norfolk when the Monarchs were ranked in the top 20.
Deacons Place Three on UNC Classic All-Tournament Team
- The successful weekend in Chapel Hill yielded some early accolades for Justin Moose, James Riley and Vicente Bastidas. Each were named to All-Tournament team. They were joined by North Carolina's Ryan Kneipper, Logan Pause, Mike Gell and Matt Crawford; Saint Louis' Martin Hutton and Mike Kirchhoff; Akron's Mike Marich, Chris Gnandt.
Moose is on the Loose
- After graduating high school a semester early, freshman Justin Moose came to Wake Forest last January as a much heralded player on the high school and club ranks. Soccer America rated him as the 7th-best incoming freshman this fall. Through just two regular season games, the Statesville, N.C., native has proven to be an impact player with a flair for the dramatic.
- In each of Wake Forest's first two games, Moose has tallied goals in the final ten minutes of regulation. Against 11th-ranked Saint Louis, the goal forced a 1-1 tie and against Akron, the goal gave the Deacons a 2-1 victory.
White, Jones Miss UNC Classic; Status Questionable vs. Monarchs
- Already off to a good start, the Demon Deacons will receive a huge boost upon the return of Kelvin Jones, an All-ACC candidate at central defender, and All-American forward Jeremiah White. Both have missed the first two games due to injury. Their status for this weekend is questionable.
- Jones, a junior, is the most experienced of the Deacon defenders with 25 starts in his first two seasons at Wake Forest. Last year, White led the ACC in scoring with 15 goals and seven assists as a sophomore on his way to All-America honors.
- On the backline, freshman Michael Parkhurst has filled in admirably for Jones while making his collegiate debut. Up front, although Justin Moose has picked up the scoring slack, several players have seen additional playing time including freshman Ryan Alexander and sophomores Stephen Keel and Tomy Szczypiorski. Keel made the start against Saint Louis while Szczypiorski got the call against Akron.
Up Next: September 14 vs. #1 Virginia
- The Demon Deacons quickly jump into the rigorous Atlantic Coast Conference schedule. The first opponent is Virginia, currently ranked number one nationally in the Soccer America poll and third in the NSCAA rankings. Last season, UVa narrowly beat WFU twice by 1-0 margins and did not allow a goal in six regular season ACC games. A sellout crowd of 3,000 is expected under the lights at Spry Stadium.
