The 16th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team came from behind to defeat Old Dominion 2-1 on the road on Saturday night in Norfolk, Va.
After allowing a penalty kick in the 61st minute, the two Deacon responded immediately with two quick strikes in the next two minutes and 30 seconds. The first was a penalty kick by Scott Sealy. The second goal, which proved to be the game-winner, came when Vicente Bastidas headed in a Brian Carroll corner kick.
The Monarchs opened the scoring in the 60th minute with a successful penalty kick after the game went scoreless into halftime. Attila Vendegh made the penalty kick for his first goal of the season after a Wake handball penalty was called. However, the lead would be short lived as the Deacons respond with a penalty shot of their own. Sealy converted on his attempt, tying the game at one. Moments later, Bastidas headed in Carroll's corner kick at 62:47.
The header by Bastidas would end up being the game winniner as goalkeeper William Hesmer and the Deacon defense would hold off several late Monarch charges. The Deacons (2-1-0) controlled the game in the first half firing off 11 shots while keeping ODU from getting one off.
Wake Forest (2-0-1) will begin conference play on Saturday at home against the nation's top-ranked team, Virginia. Kickoff at Spry Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
