WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Seven home football games will take place at Groves Stadium this fall, as announced by the Wake Forest athletic department. The 2003 football schedule was released on Friday, and the Demon Deacons will once again play a 12-game regular season schedule.
The upcoming season??s slate features eight teams that went to post-season bowl games in 2002, collectively posting a 5-3 record.
??I??m excited about the challenge of our schedule,?? said WFU head coach Jim Grobe. ??Obviously, it will be competitive, as we have some great teams on there, both at home and on the road. I??m also very excited about playing seven games at Groves Stadium this season.??
WFU opens the 2003 campaign on the road for the third straight year, playing at Boston College August 30. The matchup with the Eagles renews a series between two teams that haven??t met on the gridiron since 1953. On consecutive weekends in September, the Deacs will host Purdue and East Carolina, two non-conference teams Wake Forest defeated in 2002. A new non-conference opponent, Connecticut, visits Winston-Salem on Nov. 15.
Wake Forest opens ACC play in its second overall game, hosting Gator Bowl champion NC State on Sept. 6. The Deacs will also take on conference foes Georgia Tech, Clemson and Maryland at Groves Stadium this season while traveling to Virginia, Duke, Florida State and North Carolina.
Wake Forest will return 40 letterwinners and 12 starters (three offense, seven defense, two specialists) from a team that went 7-6 and won the 2002 Seattle Bowl over Oregon. The Demon Deacons will look to post their third consecutive winning season in 2003, a feat that has not been matched since the 1950-52 seasons.
