Winston-Salem, N.C. - Junior forward Scott Sealy scored three goals and added one assist as the fifth-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team defeated visiting Gardner-Webb 6-1 on Wednesday night at Spry Stadium. It was Wake Forest's sixth consecutive victory, the team's longest winning streak of the season.
After goals in the game's first 11 minutes by Wake Forest's Tomy Szczypiorski and Gardner-Webb's Brian Young, the Deacons (10-3) and Bulldogs (7-7) were tied at one for almost the entire first half. But Sealy's first of the night in the final minute before halftime gave the Deacons a 2-1 halftime edge.
The Deacons emerged from the locker room with more energy. Sealy was a one-man wrecking crew and he notched his second goal of the night in the 49th minute and his third goal in the 54th minute. Junior Stephen Keel padded the Wake Forest lead in the 66th minute on a penalty kick. Wes Allen scored the final goal of the night with 12 minutes to play in the game.
For Sealy, it was his first career hat trick. He leads the team with eight goals and all of which have come in the team's last five games. Sealy also assisted on Szczypiorski's goal, the first tally of the night. The junior from Petit Valley, Trinidad is climbing the Wake Forest career scoring chart. He ranks seventh on the list with 58 career points.
Senior midfielder Vicente Bastidas also joined elite company during Wednesday night's game. His assist on Sealy's second goal gave him his 19th career assist, putting him into a tie with former Deacon Brian Carroll for fifth on the school's all-time assist list.
The six goals by the Deacons against Gardner-Webb was the team's highest offensive output of the season. Allen became Wake Forest's 13th different goal scorer of the year.
William Hesmer made one save in goal for the Deacons in the game's first 68 minutes before giving way to fifth-year senior Brad McEachern who made one save in the final 22 minutes to preserve the victory.
The Demon Deacons won their 10th game of the year. Wake Forest has won 10 games or more in each of Jay Vidovich's 10 seasons as head coach.
Wake Forest is now unbeaten in its last 26 regular season home games. The Deacons will put that record on the line Saturday night when the third-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels come to town. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
