Last Time Out
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Clemson freshman Amanda Garcia scored a pair of goals to lead the Tigers past 14th-ranked Wake Forest, 3-1, in ACC women's soccer action from Spry Stadium Tuesday night. With the loss, the Demon Deacons fall to 9-4-3, 0-3-2 in the ACC, while Clemson improves to 8-5-2, 2-3-0 in the league.
Garcia opened the scoring just over eight minutes into the match. The attacking midfielder picked up her second of the season at the 8:11 mark to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.
Despite trailing on the scoreboard, Wake Forest seemed to have the better of play in the opening 45 minutes. The Demon Deacons had a trio of excellent scoring chances in the first half. Just over a minute after the Garcia tally, Sarah Kozey nearly equalized. The sophomore intercepted a poor distribution from Clemson goalkeeper Lauren Whitt, but her attempt from the top of the penalty box sailed high.
Katherine Winstead appeared to have tied the match, 1-1, but the senior was whistled offside. Her goal was correctly disallowed. Then at 27:23 of the opening stanza, Elizabeth Remy had a golden scoring opportunity. Taylor Toombs sent a ball across the goal mouth to Remy, who was all alone on the backside of the Tiger defense, but Remy's attempt also sailed over the crossbar.
Clemson pushed its lead to 2-0 on a well earned goal from Courtney Foster. Paige Ledford sent in a beautiful arching cross that Foster headed home past a diving Kenna Healy. The goal was Foster's team leading eighth of the season.
Kristen Kemp cut the deficit to a single goal with the first goal of her career. Kemp, who missed the first 14 games of the season after rehabbing from a knee injury, thundered home a shot at 68:10 of the match. Katherine Winstead was credited with the assist.
Despite the definite switch in momentum, Garcia would put the match away with her second tally of the match and third of the season at 77:48. The freshman beat a Wake Forest defender and blasted a shot from 25 yards out - beating an out-stretched Healy into the upper far corner.
The Demon Deacons got off 13 shots compared to the Tigers nine and Wake Forest had five corner kicks to Clemson's one.
Scouting The Terps
Maryland has dominated play in its last two games at NC State and George Mason. The Terps have outshot their opponents 32-10 in those two games. Leading scorer Kimmy Francis now has 14 career assists -- eight of those have come off corner kicks. Four of her team-high six assists this season are off corners including both at George Mason. Francis' 14 career assists -- in just two seasons -- ranks tied for eighth all-time. Sophomore Mallory Mahar has been a force since her return to the starting lineup seven games ago. She has scored four goals since she started at Florida State.
Last Meeting
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Maryland was unable to end Wake Forest's perfection.
The eighth-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons kept their record peerless, as they moved to 8-0 with a 3-1 victory over the Maryland Terrapins on Friday night at Spry Stadium. The game was the ACC opener for both teams as Wake continued its run as one of one 13 undefeated and untied clubs in Division I women's soccer.
Maryland fell to 4-3 overall with the defeat as Simone Dekker scored the Terps' lone goal.
Wake's junior midfielder Katherine Winstead converted a beautiful crossing pass from Melanie Schneider sent right into the center of the Maryland box to give the Demon Deacons a 2-1 lead in the 58th minute. The goal was Winstead's second of the game and fifth of the season as she put Wake on top 1-0 in the 42nd minute.
The Demon Deacons secured the game as Schneider netted her first career goal in the 67th minute to make it 3-1. Schneider scored from an incredibly sharp angle in the far right corner that bended past Maryland keeper Mariel Wilner into the high left corner.
Dekker scored Maryland's only goal to match Wake Forest's game-opening goal as she scored with six seconds left in the first half to knot the game at 1-1. The freshman forward knocked home a free kick from Audra Poulin to tie the game and give the Terps a boost heading into halftime.
The goal was Maryland's first against Wake Forest in four games, as the Terps had been shutout 1-0 by Wake Forest in the previous three meetings dating back to 1999.
Wake Forest opened the scoring as Winstead converted a thru ball from Alena Thom with 3:53 left in the first half to give the Deacs a 1-0 lead.
