WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team will close out the regular season Saturday night when the NC State Wolfpack travel to Spry Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Demon Deacon seniors Alena Thom, Katherine Winstead, A.B. Robbins, Lindsey Griffin and fourth-year junior Kenna Healy will be honored prior to the match.
The Demon Deacons (9-5-3, 0-4-2 ACC)will look to snap its current five-match winless streak. Wake Forest will also look for its first ACC victory of the season. A win would secure the seventh seed at next week's 2003 ACC Tournament.
2003 SENIORS
In her career, Healy has played in 24 games for the Deacs, including every single minute of Wake's 17 matches this season. She has excelled this season registering a 1.36 goals against average and seven shutouts which is second most in single-season school history. Healy's seven shutouts this season give Kenna 9.5 for her career which is tied for fourth best in program history.
Thom has been a mainstay in the Wake Forest lineup the past four years. She will make her 80th appearance and 68th start in a Deacon uniform tonight. After three years in the midfield and up font, Thom has moved into the back this season and has become one of the better defenders in the entire ACC. Thom, who has 11 career goals and 13 career assists, will finish her career in the top-10 for goals, assists, points and games played.
Winstead has not only played nearly every position in her four years with the Deacs, but has played them all well. She will also make her 80th appearance in a Wake Forest uniform this evening. Winstead led the team with nine goals in 2002, tying for the fourth best single scoring mark in school history. She has two goals and one assist this season, no goals bigger than the game wining tally in the 1-0 victory over fifth-ranked Pepperdine earlier this season. She has scored 13 goals and added 12 assists in her career, both rank in the career top-10.
Robbins is another player that has helped the Deacs all over the pitch. She opened the season up front and scored two of the biggest goals this season. Robbins netted the game winning tallies against Oregon State and Washington State in the 2003 adidas Women's Soccer Classic en route to the MVP. She has scored 11 career goals, six of which have won games for Wake Forest. Robbins will make her 81st appearance and 76th start tonight.
No player in the history of Wake Forest women's soccer has had to battle adversity like Griffin. Despite a pair of knee surgeries, she has made her way back to the starting lineup for Wake Forest. Griffin has started eight games this season and scored two goals, both in the victory over Charlotte. While the injuries have limited some of Lindsey's accomplishments on the field, her heart and character have left an impression on this program for years to come.
