WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- The Wake Forest women's soccer team figured it may have to wait anxiously as the 2003 NCAA Soccer Tournament Brackets were announced, but the Deacs hopes' were answered just moments into the selection show as they will travel to Chapel Hill Friday evening to face Southern Conference champion UNC Greensboro. Kickoff of the first round match at Fetzer Field is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
"I am really happy for the group of seniors," said head coach Tony da Luz. "I did not want them to be the group that did not get in after we have made it seven straight years. They deserved better. I am just so pleased for them."
Wake Forest earned its eighth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament due in large part to one of the most difficult schedules in the entire country. The Deacs faced 14 opponents this season that were ranked at the time of the match or finished the regular season in the top-25.
The Demon Deacons (10-6-3) and Spartans (14-6-2) met earlier this season in Greensboro. Wake Forest handled UNCG, 3-1. The Deacs have captured all six meetings with the Spartans all-time.
UNCG made its way into the tournament after blanking Furman, 2-0, in Sunday's SoCon Tournament Title match. The Spartans have captured five of the past seven SoCon Tournament championships. UNCG last made the NCAA Tournament in 2001, losing in the first round to North Carolina.
The top-ranked and unbeaten Tar Heels will face High Point in the other first round match on Friday at 5 p.m. The winners of the two matches to be played on Friday will play in a second-round NCAA Tournament match on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
The Demon Deacons and North Carolina are two of the record seven teams from the ACC to reach the NCAA Tournament. The ACC also sent seven teams two years ago.
Tickets are priced at $7 for adults, $3 for students and $1 for children on both Friday and Sunday. Plenty of tickets will be available at the Fetzer Field gates on both days. Please purchase tickets at the ticket trailer located on Carmichael Drive as you enter Fetzer Field from South Road.
Check back later this week for parking updates and more details on this weekend's NCAA games.
