Barclay Breaks 1,000...
Chris Barclay's 53-yard run for a TD was not only a career long (at that point) for the sophomore, but it pushed him over the 1,000-yard mark for the season. Barclay needed 51 yards entering today's game, and scored his 10th touchdown of the season on the Deacs' second play from scrimmage.
Barclay recorded the ninth 1,000-yard season in school history and becomes the eighth Deacon to record such a season. (James McDougald had two in 1976 and '79.) Barclay is the first since Tarence Williams finished with 1,018 yards as a junior in 2001.
Barclay is the second-youngest Deacon running back and just the third underclassmen to have a 1,000-yard season. McDougald did it as a freshman in 1976.
...Then Reaches 100...
Barclay also recorded his fifth 100-yard rushing game of his career (all this season). He reached the 100-yard mark on 13 carries midway through the second quarter. All five of his 100-yard rushing games this season came against ACC opponents -- and he had 100 yards by halftime in four of those contests.
Barclay finished the day with a career-high 243 on 28 carries, including a career long 74 yarder for a TD. It is the ninth 200-yard rushing game and foruth highest single-game total in school history. It was also the first since Morgan Kane had 224 against Georgia Tech on Nov. 20, 1999.
...And Tacks On Three TDs
Barclay recorded his 10th, 11th and 12th touchdowns of the season, the 19th, 20th and 21st of his career. It was the third time in his career (Purdue in 2002, Georgia Tech in 2003) that he's scored three touchdowns in a game.
Barclay's Season
Barclay recorded 1,192 rushing yards in 2003, the second-highest season total in school history behind Larry Hopkins 1,228 in 1971 ... his 1,895 career yards rank 10th all-time at Wake Forest ... his 12 TDs this year tie for third on the season chart with Ovie Mughelli (2002) ... his 21 career scores rank fifth all-time, one TD behind Tarence Williams ... his 1,394 all-purpose yards this year rank as the seventh-best single season mark at WFU.
Barclay's All-Purpose Attack
Chris Barclay also finished the day with 316 all-purpose yards, which ranks as the second-best single game performance in school history. John Leach set the school record with 411 versus Maryland in 1993 at Groves Stadium.
Randolph On The Run
Quarterback Cory Randolph recorded his fifth rushing touchdown of the season on a five-yard run in the second quarter. It is the most rushing TDs by a Deacon quarterback since Ben Sankey had five in 1999.
A Rare 200-Yard Rushing Duo
Wake's Chris Barclay (243) and Maryland's Buce Perry (237) both recorded at least 200 yards rushing, marking the fifth time in NCAA history (and first time ever among ACC teams) that players on opposing teams have each had 200 yards. The last time it occured was Oct. 11, 1997, when Oklahoma's De'Mond Parker (291) and Texas' Ricky Williams (223) both reached that plateau.
WFU Sets Season Attendance Record
With 18,783 fans in attendance today, Wake Forest has set a new single season record for home attendance. WFU averaged 28,273 fans over seven games in Groves Stadium this season, surpassing the previous record of 26,537 set last season.
