Wake Forest junior guard Taron Downey underwent emergency appendectomy surgery Wednesday night and will be discharged from the hospital today.
The surgery was successful and Downey is expected to make a complete recovery. The Wake Forest medical staff will monitor his progress throughout the week before determining when Downey can return to practice. He is not expected to return to practice until next week and his status for the season opener Nov. 13 against Memphis is questionable.
"Taron is one of the toughest, most competitive kids I have ever coached," head coach Skip Prosser said. "I can not remember the last time he missed a practice, much less a game. I am convinced that he will work extremely hard to return to the floor as soon as possible."
Downey, who has played in 65 career games with 41 career starts to his credit, has not missed a game at Wake Forest. He enters the season approaching milestones of 500 career points and 200 career assists.
The Demon Deacons, defending ACC regular season champions, are down to nine healthy scholarship players. Sophomore forward Chris Ellis broke a bone in his foot during the Deacons' first practice Oct. 18 and remains on crutches. Junior forward Vytas Danelius has missed much practice time this fall because of tendonitis in his knee.
Wake Forest plays its final exhibition game Saturday night against Athletes in Action in Joel Coliseum (7 p.m.).
