Twenty-three highly-regarded student-athletes have signed national letters-of-intent to join the Demon Deacon football program next fall, head coach Jim Grobe announced on Wednesday.
"I'm very excited about this class," said Grobe. "I thought last year's class was one of the strongest we had seen, and I think this year's group is even more talented. We took care of a lot of needs. I think this class has a chance to continue laying the foundation of the program we're trying to build here at Wake Forest."
Highlighting Wake Forest's 2003 signing class is quarterback Ben Mauk, Ohio's Mr. Football for 2002. Mauk is one of the most prolific quarterbacks in high school history, setting national records for career passing attempts, completions and yards while throwing 179 touchdown passes during his career at Kenton High School.
The WFU coaching staff also found some top talent in their own backyard, signing offensive lineman Matt Brim out of Carver High School. Brim helped lead the Yellow Jackets to the 2002 3-A state championship and is considered one of North Carolina's best prep players.
With this signing class, Wake Forest bolstered its depth on both lines, signing four offensive linemen and five on the defensive front. In addition to Brim, WFU added two offensive lineman from the state of Florida ?V Louis Frazier (Clearwater/Clearwater HS) and Steve Justice (Port Orange/New Smyrna Beach HS). Another offensive lineman, Brodie Overstreet, hails from Danville, Ky. (Boyle County HS) and is considered that state's top lineman prospect. Another Floridian, Aaron McKenzie (Lakeland/George Jenkins HS), signed with WFU as a defensive lineman.
The Deacon staff also found three highly-touted defensive line prospects in the state of Georgia, signing Jeromy Jones (Wheeler HS) and Zachary Stukes (Sprayberry HS) out of Marietta, along with Matthew Robinson of Cedartown (Cedartown HS). Robinson is considered one of the Peach State's highest-regarded prospects as well as one of the nation's top DEs. Defensive end Jyles Tucker, who originally signed with WFU in 2002, will join the Deacs this fall after spending a season at Hargrave Military Academy.
Wake Forest also improved its overall team speed with the addition of athletes Micah Andrews (Duluth, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian), Devin Blake (Jacksonville, Fla./First Coast HS), D'Angelo Bryant (New Ellenton, S.C./Silver Bluff HS), Kevin Marion (St. Petersburg, Fla./Dixie Hollins HS) and Travo Woods (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS). Andrews (the son of former NFL running back William Andrews) and Woods signed with WFU as running backs, while Blake and Bryant will bolster the Deacon secondary. Marion, who broke a 16-year-old Florida state record in the long jump (25'5"), comes to WFU as a wide receiver.
In addition to Mauk, Wake Forest also signed quarterback Bruce Hall (Milton, Fla./Milton HS), who is considered one of the nation's top dual-threat quarterbacks. Hall passed for over 5,600 yards, rushed for over 2,500 yards and was responsible for 65 touchdowns during his prep career.
"I feel this is a fairly balanced class," Grobe said. "We would have liked to sign another running back and wide receiver, but overall I feel we took care of our needs on both sides of the ball."
Florida and Georgia are well-represented in Wake Forest's signing class this year, as the Deacons signed seven prospects from each of those states. But the WFU coaching staff also recruited heavily in North Carolina, signing two highly-regarded athletes in Kenneth Moore, a cornerback out of Charlotte (Butler HS) and Delon Lowe, a wide receiver from Fayetteville (E.E. Smith) in addition to Brim.
Academics are also a strong asset of this year's signing class. Wake Forest signed Zac Selmon (Norman, Okla./Norman HS), a tight end who was also the valedictorian of his senior class. He is the son of Dewey Selmon, and the nephew of Lee Roy and Lucious Selmon, all three of whom played football at Oklahoma and in the NFL. Brim, Frazier, Mauk and Robinson are also all strong students who bring high academic credentials to Wake Forest.
