WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Demon Deacon football team headed into the final week of spring practice with its 12th session of the season on Tuesday afternoon. Wake Forest practiced for two hours on the campus practice fields, wrapping up the day with a brief offense vs. defense drill.
??I like the work we're getting done, but I'm disappointed in the number of mistakes were making,?? said head coach Jim Grobe. ??The good thing about starting spring practice early was the carryover we had from the bowl game, but we lost a lot of veteran players and have some really young guys out there right now. We're just not sharp yet. The offense is committing turnovers and the defense is giving up too many big plays. We're playing hard, but not smart.??
As he has all spring, sophomore quarterback Cory Randolph ran the first-team offense on Tuesday, completing long passes to both senior Anthony Young and sophomore Chris Davis. Redshirt freshman signal caller Zac Taylor worked with the second-team. Grobe has been pleased with what he??s seen from the young quarterbacks thus far.
??Cory's been doing some good things,?? Grobe said. ??Our main concern with him is his lack of experience, but he's been making some good decisions. Zac is throwing the ball with more authority and seems more comfortable out there.??
On the defensive side of the ball, the linebacker corps has stood out this spring. The veteran group includes seniors Kellen Brantley, Dion Williams, and junior Brad White, the team's leading tackler last season.
??I really think the linebackers are going to be one of our strengths this season,?? Grobe said. ??I've also seen Quintin Williams and Eric King doing some good things in the secondary and I think we've got a good - but young - group of defensive lineman.??
The Deacs will continue practice this week, with sessions on Wednesday and Thursday. The spring season culminates with a final scrimmage on Saturday, March 29 at Groves Stadium (1:00 p.m.).
