Haas Wins First Round Match at U.S. Amateur

OAKMONT, Pa. - Demon Deacon senior Bill Haas has advanced in match play of the 2003 U.S. Amateur Championship. Haas posted a 7 and 5 victory over Jessie Mudd in a first-round matchup on Wednesday afternoon.

Haas advances to the second-round to face Josh Persons of Fargo, N.D. That match is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. Thursday at Oakmont Country Club.

In Wednesday??s match, Haas went one-up on the first hole and never looked back. In playing just 13 holes, Haas recorded two birdies on the 6th and 13th holes, both par-3. The 13th-hole birdie clinched the victory, putting him up seven strokes with five holes left to play.

Haas?? next opponent, Persons, advanced with a 2 and 1 victory over Blake Sattler.
