The Wake Forest women's soccer team opens its 2003 exhibition season Saturday against Virginia Tech. Kickoff at Spry Stadium is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. The men's squad will follow with an exhibition match against Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m.
The Deacons finished the 2002 season with an overall record of 13-8-1 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the seventh consecutive season. Wake Forest opened the season with nine straight victories and climbed as high as sixth in the country in a number of national polls.
After a tough loss to North Carolina in the first round of the ACC Tournament, the Deacs responded with a 2-0 shutout over William & Mary in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Wake Forest ran across the TarHeels in the second round and dropped a 3-1 decision.
The Deacs return 11 letterwinners and six starters from last season. Wake Forest also welcomes one of the top freshmen classes in the entire ACC - a group that includes 13 players.
The Deacs top three scorers of senior Katherine Winstead, sophomore Sarah Kozy and senior Alena Thom all return ready for another big campaign. This trio totaled 27 goals and 16 assists last season. Wake Forest is one of just three teams in the ACC to return its top three scorers. Winstead was named All-ACC second team, while Kozey earned All-ACC freshmen team honors.
Wake Forest also returns starters A.B. Robbins, Melanie Schneider and Alli Hunt. Robbins was a second team All-ACC selection in 2002.
The Deacs open the regular season the weekend of August 29-31 at the University of Connecticut Tournament. Wake Forest will face the host Huskies Friday, the 29th, at 7 p.m. The Deacs will return Sunday afternoon, the 31st, to face Notre Dame. Kickoff with the Fighting Irish is scheduled for noon.
