Preseason Practice Report
Saturday, August 23, 2003
Preseason Camp Concludes: In the final day of preseason camp, the Wake Forest football team conducted a scrimmage at Groves Stadium on a clear, hot Saturday afternoon. The Deacs scrimmaged for about an hour and a half. After opening the session with punt team drills, the offensive and defensive units went head-to-head. The first-team defense looked impressive, stopping several drives by the second and third-team offenses. On the other side of the ball, running back Dominic Anderson broke out for some nice long runs. Wide receiver Anthony Young caught a long pass from quarterback Cory Randolph and broke a tackle to find the endzone.
Quoting Head Coach Jim Grobe
On today??s scrimmage: ??We??re still a tired football team. There??s not a lot of legs or zip out there. But we??re learning our assignments better and we??re making more plays than missing plays. Today I thought we made some more big plays. We looked a lot crisper than in our previous scrimmages.??
On Dominic Anderson: ??There??s no one on this football team who wants to play more than Dominic Anderson. He just wants to be on the field. When you have a player like that, you want to find a way to get him out there.??
On injuries: ??We still have some nagging injuries. But there??s a solid 48 hours before our next practice so you hope some of these guys can heal up over the two-day span. We??re contemplating moving people around (because of the injuries) but we??ve put that on hold until Monday. At that point we??ll have to take a hard fast look at things because we??ll have to make decisions about travel, etc.??
How did preseason camp go? ??I feel pretty good about how it went. We came in with a lot of defensive and offensive schemes and we??ve narrowed things down. I think we??ve got most everyone in the right position. We also ran a lot of schemes that we won??t use this year, but we wanted each other to see them -- we serviced each other in that way. On Monday we??ll narrow our focus down.??
On team chemistry: ??This is a close football team, they really like each other. I think there??s more chemistry on the defense right now than there is on the offense. The offense is getting that way, but there??s so many players still concerned about their own assignments. They??re still trying to take care of themselves. I??d rather have it that way at this point.??
