William Hesmer Named Preseason All-American

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest senior goalkeeper William Hesmer was named to Soccer America's Preseason All-America team, the publication announced on Tuesday. Hesmer, a native of Wilson, N.C., is the team captain for the fourth-ranked Demon Deacons.
As a junior, Hesmer was selected as a first team All-American by Soccer America and a second team All-American by the NSCAA. He was a first team All-ACC and All-South selection after posting the best single season by a goalkeeper in Wake Forest history. He was a part of nine shutouts last year and recorded a 0.65 goals against average, a new Wake Forest record. That mark ranked second nationally last year.
Hesmer was a second team All-ACC pick as a sophomore and made the ACC All-Tournament team as a freshman.
"William has progressed every year," tenth year Wake Forest head coach Jay Vidovich said. "He has developed and matured as a leader. He could be a driving force behind our success this year."
Wake Forest begins its regular season this weekend at home with the Wake Forest adidas Invitational. All four teams in the field are ranked including fourth-ranked Wake Forest, fifth-ranked St. John's, 10th-ranked Connecticut and 19th-ranked North Carolina. The Demon Deacons will play Connecticut on Friday night. On Saturday, Wake Forest plays the Red Storm. All contests involving Wake Forest will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
