Oregon State
The Demon Deacons and Beavers will meet for the second consecutive season. Wake Forest slipped past Oregon State, 2-1, on Sept. 1 of 2002 at the Florida State Nike Invitational.
Pac-10
While the Deacs are just 1-0 against the Cougars and Beavers, Wake Forest has faced a number of other foes from the Pac-10. The Demon Deacons have also played UCLA, California, Oregon, USC and Stanford - all in the past three years. In fact, Wake Forest will play the Golden Bears next weekend at the Colorado College Tournament.

Last Time Out
Davidson, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team used goals from five different players to race past Davidson, 5-0, in women's college soccer action from Tuesday, Sept. 9.
The Demon Deacons wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Freshman Kaitlyn Doe picked up the first goal of her career at the 3:03 mark of the first-half. Sarah Kozey registered the assist.
Tracie Abbott, another freshman, gave Wake Forest a two-goal cushion with her first career tally. Abbott knocked home a rebound at 18:30. Senior Katherine Winstead and freshman Elizabeth Remy made the score, 4-0, with goals just over three minutes apart. Winstead picked up her first of the season at 29:15 off an assist from fellow senior Alena Thom, while Remy recorded her third goal of 2003 at 32:38. Kozey recorded her second assist of the match.
The four-goal lead was more than enough for Deacs' netminder Kenna Healy. The junior faced just three shots and made one save en route to the shutout. Healy has now recorded three shutouts this season.
Wake Forest closed the scoring in the match's waning seconds. Freshman Taylor Toombs scored an unassisted goal at 89:54 of the match. The goal is Toombs' third on the campaign.
After going scoreless over the first 200-minutes of the season, the Demon Deacons have tallied five goals in back-to-back matches - eight of those goals have been scored by freshmen.
With the triumph, Wake Forest picks up its second straight shutout victory and improves to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 2-3-0.
Scouting The Cougars
Washington State is coming off an 11-7-2 record in 2002 and their second NCAA tournament appearance in three years. The Cougars return nine starters, including eight seniors. Goalkeeper Sara Leibowitz started 17 of 18 games and tallied a 10-2-1 record one year ago. Shay Hobby, SoccerBuzz All-Region third team, leads a solid back line. Offensively, the Cougars are led by three-time team captain and senior striker Rachel Rodrick. Rodrick is currently 3rd on WSU's all-time points list with 46. She earned All-Pac-10 second team and SoccerBuzz All-West Region second team honors. Nicole Wilcox led the Cougars with eight goals and eight assists in 2002.
Washington State is 1-3-0 entering this weekend. The Cougars picked up their only win of the season this past weekend against Montana, 4-0. The Cougars lost earlier this season to a pair of ACC foes - North Carolina (4-0) and Maryland (4-2).
Tony's Take on Washington State
"Washington State has real hard nosed kids. They have played a real tough schedule - North Carolina, Maryland and Cal Poly. So, their record is a little deceiving, but they played those quality teams pretty tough. They come into this tournament with confidence after a decisive win in their last match over Montana. I expect an NCAA Tournament game atmosphere."
Scouting The Beavers
Oregon State has one lone senior, 2002 scoring leader Courtney Carter, but the Beavers returned five of last year's six top scorers. Of the quintet, Brianna Monka (17 points), Stacey Mescher (11 points) and Tessa Baker (7 points) are sophomores, while Lindsey Beem (11 points) returns for her junior season.
Carter, whose 19 points last year placed her eighth in the Pac-10 scoring race, enters the 2003 campaign with 37 career points (15 goals, 7 assists) - good for 10th on OSU's all-time list. With 30 career points (10 goals, 10 assists), Beem is 12th.
The Beavers enter this weekend at 3-0-1. Oregon State blanked San Diego State, 1-0, and picked up a pair of two goal victories over South Florida and Idaho. The Beavers tied San Diego, 0-0, in their only other match of 2003.
Tony's Take On Oregon State
"Oregon State's only significant loss from last season was their goalkeeper, who was good, but they are another solid Pac-10 team. They gave us quite a battle last season and I would expect the same this year. They are extremely well coached, prepared and organized."
Last Meeting With Oregon State
Tallahassee, Fla. -- The Wake Forest women's soccer team wrapped up the Florida State Nike Invitational with a victory over Oregon State, 2-1.
Wake's first goal came at the 30:08 mark of the first half as Sarah Kozey lifted the ball over a crowd of defensive players to Alena Thom, who sent the ball in the net.
During the second half, Katie Johnson connected on an assist from Sarah Kozey to put the Deacs up 2-0. The Beavers didn't answer the Deacs' offensive efforts until the 63:15 mark with a goal by Stacey Mescher, assisted by Jillian Nicks.
Oregon State's goalkeeper, Jo Fletcher had five saves for the match, while Wake goalie Erin Regan had none.
Wake Forest's offense dominated the game as the Deacs took 18 shots, including 12 in the second-half, while Oregon State had four. Wake also tallied seven corner kicks to Oregon State's one.
Wake Forest Blankets Liberty & Davidson
The Demon Deacons allowed just five total shots over the past two matches - shutout victories over Liberty and Davidson. Wake Forest has registered 37 shots over the same span.
Balanced Scoring Downs Davidson
Wake Forest had five different players score goals in the 5-0 drubbing of Davidson on Sept. 9. It marked the first game since the Deacs' 6-0 shutout of Liberty on Oct. 30, 2001 that five Wake Forest players scored in a single-game.
Healy Blanks Another Foe
Kenna Healy recorded her third shutout in just four games for Wake Forest. The single-season shutout mark is nine held by Erin Regan during the 1999 season.
Remy Ends Drought
Wake Forest went scoreless over the first 205:21 of the season, but Elizabeth Remy ended the drought with a pair of goals in the first-half of the 5-0 whitewash of Liberty on Sept. 4.
Remy and Toombs Each Net Two
Elizabeth Remy and Taylor Toombs each scored a pair of goals to lead Wake Forest over Liberty, 5-0, on Sept. 4. It marked the first time in Demon Deacon history that a pair of freshmen tallied two goals in a single-game.
Healy Continues To Shine
Junior goalkeeper Kenna Healy registered her second shutout of the season against Liberty on Sept. 4. Healy recorded just one save, but has now recorded three shutouts in five career starts.
Back-to-Back Top-10 Foes
The Demon Deacons always play a schedule full of nationally ranked opponents, but this weekend was the first time since the 2001 season that Wake Forest faced consecutive foes ranked in the top-10. Wake Forest faced #7 Santa Clara and #5 Portland at the 2001 Wake Forest adidas Soccer Classic.
Scoring Drought
Wake Forest failed to score a single goal over the first 205:21 of the 2003 campaign. It also marked the first time since the first two games of the 2001 season (9.3 vs. Georgia/9.9 vs. Santa Clara) that the Deacs were blanked in consecutive outings.
Healy Shines In Third Career Start
Kenna Healy was a definite bright spot for Wake Forest in the scoreless tie with #8 UConn on Aug. 29. In just her third career start, the junior registered 10 saves on the night - including three in the second overtime session. Healy has recorded two shutouts in her first three career starts.
Newcomers Already In The Fold
Wake Forest wasted little time throwing its freshmen class into the mix. The Deacons had three freshmen (Keisha Garrick, Elizabeth Remy, Lindsey Jaco) in the starting lineup for both games this past weekend at the UConn adidas Women's Soccer Classic. In addition, Wake Forest's first four substitutes in each match were freshman (Taylor Toombs, Tara Caldwell, Kaitlyn Doe, Tracie Abbott).
New Faces ... Same Expectations
The word "rebuilding" has been tossed around by some outside the Wake Forest women's soccer program in regards to the upcoming 2003 season. With the loss of seven seniors - including five starters - some might think that is the case, but with the addition of 13 talented freshmen and the return of 11 letterwinners the Deacons will make another run at the NCAA Tournament.
Deacons Picked Seventh
Wake Forest was picked seventh in the 2003 ACC Women's Soccer Coaches Poll. North Carolina was the odds-on-favorite according to the coaches. The Tar Heels garnered seven of the eight first place votes. Virginia received the only other first place vote. The Cavaliers were chosen second, followed by Florida State, Clemson, Maryland, Duke, the Deacons and NC State.
Healy Takes Over Between Pipes
After two seasons behind Erin Regan, Healy will open the 2003 season as the starting goalkeeper for the Deacons. The junior has played in just five games over her first two seasons.
Lucky Number 13
Wake Forest welcomes 13 freshmen - the largest freshman class in the history of the program - in 2003.
Robbins Moves Up
Senior A.B. Robbins developed into one of the better marking backs in the entire ACC over the past three seasons, but Robbins will push up into an attacking role this season. Robbins, who scored five goals from the back last season, gives Wake Forest some much needed size and strength in the attacking third.
WFU Lands 26th Best Recruiting Class
Not only was the 2003 recruiting class the largest in Wake Forest history, but it was also recognized by SoccerBuzz Magazine as the 26th best in the entire country.
Up Next
Wake Forest will return to action on Sept. 19 at UNC Greensboro. Kickoff at the UNCG Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Deacs have captured all five of the meetings with the Spartans.
