WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest senior free safety Quintin Williams was named to the 2003 American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team, as announced by the AFCA on Wednesday. Williams, recognized for his involvement on the WFU campus and Winston-Salem community, was one of 11 Division I-A players nationwide selected to the Good Works Team.
Two 11-man teams, a Division I-A team and a combined team from Divisions I-AA, II, III and the NAIA, honor players for their dedication and commitment to community service. From 1992-1996, the Good Works Team was selected by the College Football Association. When the CFA disbanded in 1997, the AFCA began selecting the teams.
Student-athletes, nominated by their schools, have to be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or involved in other community service activities. Candidates must also display sincere concern and reliability, while also having made a favorable impression on the organizations with which they are involved.
Williams is the second straight Demon Deacon to be named to this squad, following quarterback James MacPherson??s selection a year ago. It is also the second straight year that the Wake Forest honoree has also been the lone ACC representative on the Good Works team.
??It never ceases to amaze me to see the contributions student-athletes make to their communities,?? said AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff. ??Often times, these young men are better known for the good things they do on the field. The AFCA is proud to recognize these student-athletes for the good things they do in their communities.??
Williams is a member of the WFU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is serving as Vice-President of the organization for the 2003-04 school year. He has also represented WFU on the ACC??s SAAC the last two years. In the spring of 2003, Williams was chosen to represent Wake Forest at the APPLE Conference at the University of Virginia (APPLE ?V Athletes Prevention Programming and Leadership Education). Williams?? community involvement has included work with Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity. He has also served as a speaker at the Lamont Scales Football Camp in Winston-Salem.
Back on campus, Williams has helped initiate the SAM??s Program (Student-Athlete Mentor) as well as a Freshman Mentoring Program, both of which began this school year. He participates in the Coach??s Kids program, which gives area youth an opportunity to attend Wake Forest sporting events and interact with student-athletes. He??s also been involved with the ??Eat With the Deacs?? program, in which area youth visit the campus and have dinner with WFU student-athletes.
??I am thrilled that Quintin has received this well-deserved honor,?? said Julie Griffin, WFU??s CHAMPS coordinator. ??It??s been a pleasure working with a person of his caliber. He??s shown great leadership skills on the SAAC as well as in organizing the SAM??s program.??
