A Wake Forest Win...
- Moves WFU's all-time record to 369-554-34.
- Gives the Deacs a 4-2 record all-time against East Carolina.
- Gives the Deacs' a 9-2 record in non-conference games since the Jim Grobe era began in 2001.
- Is WFU's third-straight victory over the Pirates.
- Gives the Deacs a 3-1 start to the season -- its best such start since the 1999 campaign (also 3-1).
"Nailbiter" Streak Halted
Prior to tonight, every game in the Wake Forest-East Carolina series had been decided by 10 points or less.
Idlette Scores His Third
Redshirt freshman Willie Idlette scored his third career touchdown in his fourth career game on a five-yard reverse on the Deacs' opening drive. It was his shortest scoring play, however, as his previous TDs were on a 75-yard reverse and a 50-yard punt return.
Trio of Turnovers Results In...Nothing
A sequence of three straight midfield turnovers in the first quarter did not result in anything on the scoreboard. ECU had the first miscue when Marvin Townes fumbled and WFU's Jamaal Argrow recovered it -- the third of his career. Two plays later, Deacon quarterback Cory Randolph fumbled on a rush and Brandton Ranier's recovery gave the ball back to the Pirates. Just two plays after that, Deac safety Warren Braxton intercepted QB Desmond Robinson. WFU, however, was unable to cross midfield and forced to punt.
For Argrow and Braxton, the turnovers simply added to their impressive career takeaway totals. Argrow has six -- three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries. Braxton owns nine -- three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and three interceptions.
Odds And Ends
Jason Anderson extended his streak to 12 straight games with at least two receptions ... Trevor Harris caused his first career fumble on a ECU kickoff return (the Pirates recovered) ... Wake Forest has scored in 13 of 16 quarters this season ... cornerback Marcus McGruder recorded his fourth career interception and first since 2001 ... Chris Barclay scored his 11th career rushing touchdown ... WFU's two third-quarter scores (Anderson's reception, Barclay's rush) were scored within a span of 1:33 ... Jerome Nichols blocked his first career kick when he stopped ECU's extra-point attempt in the fourth quarter ... ECU's 16 points were the most scored by the Pirates in a game this season.
King Gets Another Pick
Cornerback Eric King recorded his fifth career interception -- and third versus East Carolina -- when he picked off a Desmond Robinson pass in the second quarter. King grabbed two interceptions from Pirate QB Paul Troth in last year's 27-22 WFU victory. King also recovered a Pirate fumble in the fourth quarter this year.
The (Red)Shirt Comes Off
True rookie running back D'Angelo Bryant took off the redshirt when he entered the game late in the first half. He becomes the just the second true freshman to play this season following DE Jyles Tucker. Bryant carried the ball seven times for 34 yards on his initial drive, including a two-yard TD rush.
The Randolph-Anderson Connection
Quarterback Cory Randolph found Jason Anderson for a 79-yard touchdown in the third quarter -- the third-longest pass completion in Wake Forest history. It is also the longest WFU pass completion at Groves Stadium and second longeest completion in this country. (WFU's school-record completion of 85 yards took place in Tokyo, Japan in 1982.) It's is Anderson's fifth career reception of 51 yards or more -- all touchdowns.
Interceptions Galore
Wake Forest picked off East Carolina three times tonight -- the most in a game since the Pirates threw four interceptions in last year's meeting on Sept. 7.
