Colorado Springs, Colo. - Wake Forest freshman midfielder Keisha Garrick scored her first collegiate goal in the 63rd minute lifting the Demon Deacons to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over #12 and previously undefeated California in women's college soccer action at Colorado College's Stewart Field Friday afternoon.
With a gentle breeze at her back, Garrick dribbled across the center stripe and unleashed a 40-yard rocket from just inside the left sideline at 62:36 of the contest. The shot appeared to ride the wind as it sailed over the head of goalkeeper Anna Key into the far upper corner of the Golden Bears net to snap a 1-1 tie.
Cal outshot the Demon Deacons, 11-9 overall, but could manage only an early tally by freshman Alivia Mazura, who converted from close in on a cross from the left side by senior Kassie Doubrava at the 24:20 mark.
Unranked Wake Forest, which improved to 6-1-1 for the season, pulled even late in the first half when sophomore Sarah Kozey connected on a 25-yard shot from directly in front of the California cage after taking a pass from senior A.B. Robbins.
The Demon Deacons will attempt to knock off its second straight ranked opponent Sunday as Wake Forest takes on #5 Pepperdine. Kickoff with the Waves is scheduled for 3 p.m. (EDT).
