Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team used a pair of goals from freshmen Elizabeth Remy and Taylor Toombs to blank Liberty, 5-0, in the Demon Deacons' home opener Thursday night.
After going 200-minutes without a goal last weekend at the UConn adidas Soccer Classic, Remy wasted little time giving Wake Forest (1-1-1) an early lead. The Norman, Okla. native tallied her first career goal at the 5:21 mark of the first-half.
Remy struck again just minutes later. The forward broke free behind the Flames' defense and beat Liberty (0-3-0) goalkeeper Natalie Mayer. Sarah Kozey picked up the assist for the Deacs.
Wake Forest would take the two-goal cushion into halftime. The Demon Deacons put the game out of reach just moments into the second frame. Toombs scored back-to-back goals just three minutes (45:32/48:56) apart to extend the lead to 4-0. Remy assisted the first Toombs tally, while the second went unassisted.
Melanie Schneider capped off the scoring for Wake Forest with an unassisted goal at 76:42. Kaitlyn Doe nearly scored her first career goal, but her header glanced off the post. Schneider was in the right place at the right time and buried the rebound.
For the evening, the Deacs out shot Liberty, 16-2. Kenna Healy was forced to make just one save en route to her second shutout of the season and third in five career starts.
Wake Forest returns to action next Tuesday night, September 9, at Davidson. Kickoff with the Wildcats is scheduled for 7 p.m.
