Winston-Salem, N.C. - The third-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 1-0 road victory at Virginia Tech on Friday night in Blacksburg, Va. James Riley's goal in the 69th minute enabled the Demon Deacons to improve to 3-0 on the season.
The game's only goal followed an Adam Hakes cross from the right wing. Riley charged into the penalty area and scored on a volley effort at the 68:03 mark of the contest. Riley became the fifth Deacon to score in a goal in the team's first three games.
Wake Forest outshot Virginia Tech 17-14 and Deacon senior All-American goalkeeper William Hesmer made eight saves for his second shutout of the year.
The game was the first at Virginia Tech's new Moseley Field and was played in front of more than 1,000 fans. For Wake Forest, it was its third straight contest against a Big East opponent. Last weekend, the Deacons defeated Connecticut and St. John's.
The Demon Deacons will go back on the road next weekend in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener against Virginia. Kickoff in Charlottesville is set for next Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
