Deacs Look To Rebound After 75-58 Loss To Maryland
The Wake Forest women's basketball team will look to rebound from its disappointing effort against Maryland last week with another ACC home tilt against Florida State. Tip-off with the Seminoles is scheduled for Joel Coliseum at 7 p.m.
The Demon Deacons enter the contest following their 75-58 loss to Maryland on Jan. 9. With a win over the Terrapins, it would have been the latest into the season that Wake was .500 since 1998-99 season. But, Shay Doron scored a career-high 32 points, including 23 in the second-half, to lead Maryland to its third straight ACC victory.
Sophomore Liz Strunk was one of the few bright spots for the Deacs. Strunk scored a career-high 23 points. Sophomore Cotelia Bond-Young, reigning ACC Co-Player of the Week, added 14.
Scouting Report On Florida State
The Seminoles are under the direction of seventh-year head coach Sue Semrau. A UC San Deigo graduate, Semrau owns a career record of 86-100. Florida State returns 10 letterwinners from last year's 17-13 squas that reached the second round of the WNIT. The Seminoles also return four starters. FSU is coming off their second consecutive ACC victory. The 'Noles opened the conference season 0-2, but a road rin at Clemson and a home win over previously unbeaten Maryland leave FSU at .500 in the ACC. Senior Taskeika Allen, a second team All-ACC selection a year ago, leads the team in scoring at 14.6 ppg. Genisis Choice is the team's leading rebounder with 6.2 rpg and is second on the squad at 11.2 ppg.

Last Time Out
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest sophomore Liz Strunk scored a career-high 23 points, but it was not enough as Maryland used a career-high and freshman record 32 points from Shay Doron to get past the Demon Deacons, 75-58, in ACC women's basketball action Friday morning from Joel Coliseum.
Doron scored 23 in the second-half as the Terps (11-3, 3-0) blew open the game in the second-half. The Terps, who improve to 3-0 in the ACC for the first time since the 1991-92 season, outscored the Deacs, 47-30, after halftime. The 47 points were the second most points surrendered by Wake Forest (8-7, 1-3 ACC) in any half this season.
Doron finished the game 9-for-17 from the field, 3-for-7 from 3-point land and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. The 32 point effort was the seventh highest ever by a Terrapins women's basketball player. Kalika France was the only other Maryland player in double figures. France, another freshman, scored 15 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out three assists.
Strunk went 8-for-13 from the field, including a 3-pointer, and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. Strunk established a new single game career-high for the third time this season. The 23 points eclipsed her previous career-high of 18 points which she set against #14/14 North Carolina earlier this season.
Cotelia Bond-Young was the lone other Deac in double figures. Bond-Young, coming off her career-high 27 point effort against NC State last Monday night, scored 14 points and dished out four assists. Junior Erin Ferrell managed only four points, but the forward did collect a career-high eight rebounds.
Maryland scored the game's first four points and pushed its lead to as many as five points in the first-half, 16-11, with 8:38 left. The Deacs answered with a 12-2 run over the next 3:51, capped off by a layup from Strunk to give Wake Forest a 23-18 lead. The forward scored eight of her 14 first-half points in the span.
The Terps quickly responded with a 10-1 run of its own. Maryland regained a four-point lead with 1:00 left in the first-half, but the Deacs scored the final four points of the half as the teams entered the halftime lockerroom tied, 28-28.
The Deacs and Terrapins each struggled from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Maryland connected on only 12-for-31 (38.7%) from the field, while Wake Forest went 10-for-30 (33.3%) from the floor. The teams also combined to knock down just a single 3-point field goal on 11 attempts.
The Wake Forest full-court trap kept the game close, despite the Deacs struggles from the field. The Demon Deacons forced 14 turnovers in the first-half, registering nine steals.

The Streak Is Over
Wake Forest picked up its first ACC victory of the season, but it came in an arena in which the Demon Deacons have had very little success. The Deacs held off a late charging NC State, 70-66, on Jan. 5. The victory not only snapped a 14-game losing streak to the Wolfpack, but it also was Wake's first win Raleigh over the Wolfpack since Feb. 25, 1996 - a span of seven consecutive road losses. In fact, the triumph was the Deacs' second victory in Raleigh 28 games.
Tonia Brown Unable To Find Perimeter Stroke
Senior guard Tonia Brown stands third in WFU history in career 3-pointers and 3-point field goals, but Brown has missed her last 20 attempts behind the 3-point line. Brown has struggled this season from 3-point territory, connecting on only 5-for-35 (14.3 percent).

It marked the second time in the previous four games that Ferrell best her previous career-high. Liz Strunk Finally Eclipses Career-High In Points
Liz Strunk scored a career-high 18 points in the defeat at #14 North Carolina on Dec. 2. The sophomore's previous career-high of 16 was originally set last season, but Strunk equalled the mark earlier this season and recorded 14 points on three other occasions.
Deacs Let One Get Away
Entering the game with #15/16 Virginia Tech on Dec. 29, Wake Forest had gone 7-0 when leading with less than 10 minutes to go, but the Hokies snapped that streak when they rallied from a seven-point, second-half deficit for a 70-59 victory.
Free Throw Line Unkind To Wake Forest
The Demon Deacons are shooting just .630 from the free throw line, worst in the ACC. The struggles from the charity stripe haunted the Deacs in their 70-59 loss at #15/16 Virginia Tech on Dec. 29. Wake Forest had a pair of seven-point, second half leads, but a 4-of-14 effort from the free throw line in the final 20 minutes allowed the Hokies to rally for the win.
Deacs Torrid Against Holy Cross
Wake Forest not only shot 55.6% in the first half against Holy Cross on Dec. 28, but finished the afternoon 55.9% from the floor for the game. It is a season best for the Deacs.

Deacs Keeps Lady Aggies Below Freezing Point
In the 87-29 victory over NC A&T on Dec. 14, the 29 points allowed is not only season low, but nearly eclipsed the school record. The school record for fewest points allowed in a single game is 21 set on Feb. 10, 1972 when the Deacs defeated Guilford, 55-21. Wake Forest last held an opponent under 30 points on Nov. 26, 1990 in a 90-29 rout of Morgan State.

Deacs Lose At The Free Throw Line
Marshall took advantage of a major differential from the free throw line in the victory over the Deacs on Dec. 2. While Wake Forest went to line the line 14 times overall and seven in the second half, the Herd went to the line 39 times overall and 30 after halftime.
Tonia Brown Needed More Help
