Winston-Salem, N.C. - Wake Forest redshirt freshman linebacker Jonathan Abbate was named ACC Rookie of the Week, in a vote by a panel of the league's media on Monday.
Making his first career start Saturday against Virginia Tech, Abbate had 15 tackles, including seven solo and eight assisted. In addition, the 6-0, 247-pound freshman from Powder Springs, Ga., forced a fumble near the goal line in the game. The 15 tackles were the most by a Demon Deacon defender since the 2002 season.
Abbate is tied for the ACC lead with 33 solo tackles and has 20 more solo tackles than any other ACC freshman.
It is the second time Abbate has been named ACC Rookie of the Week.
