WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest defender Alli Hunt could not have picked a better time to score her first career goal. The senior buried a penalty kick in the 20th minute of the first half and junior Sarah Kozey added an insurance goal in the second half to give the Demon Deacons a 2-0 shutout over Maryland in ACC women's soccer action from Spry Stadium Saturday night.
Hunt, who made her 75th career appearance in a Demon Deacon uniform, was honored before kickoff. Hunt returned the favor to the Wake Forest faithful by giving the Deacs a 1-0 lead. Kozey found some space inside the Terrapins penalty area, but was taken down by Maryland defender Jennifer Lovecchio. Hunt took the ensuing penalty kick and buried it past Nikki Resnick.
The Demon Deacons could have easily taken a two or three goal advantage into halftime. In the 41st minute, substitute Taylor Toombs played a long-arching ball behind the Maryland defense, but junior Melanie Schneider's header went just wide of the far post. Then minutes later, Toombs again played a ball behind the Terps defense, sending Kozey into the penalty area one-on-one with Resnick, but the Maryland goalkeeper made the save.
Kozey would add some insurance in the 58th minute. The junior scored her team-best 10th goal of the season and 25th of her career. Freshman goalkeeper Heather Currie bombed a punt past the Maryland defense. Kozey ran onto the ball, beating both Terrapin defenders, and then drilled a shot past a charging Resnick. Currie was credited with the assist. Kozey now trails Stacy Roeck (1998-01) for third place on the all-time goal list by just a single score. Anne Shropshire (1996-99) is second with 28 career goals and Emily Taggart is tops with 29. The 10 goals this year is the third most ever scored by a Demon Deacon in a single-season.
Not only did Currie help out on the offensive end, but the freshman goalkeeper recorded her third career shutout. Currie made seven saves on the evening. Resnick did her part for the Terrapins. The sophomore made seven stops, including two or three tremendous saves.
Wake Forest and Maryland each recorded 11 shots on the evening. The Terps had the advantage in corner kicks, 4-3.
Wake Forest returns to action next Friday night, Oct. 22, at NC State. Kickoff with the Wolfpack is scheduled for SAS Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C. at 7 p.m.
