Today's Captains...
Seniors Blake Lingruen and Marcus McGruder were today's captains. Wake Forest won the toss and elected to defer.
For Starters...
- Jason Anderson started at wide receiver for the first time since the East Carolina game (sprained ankle).
- Jonathan Abbate made his first career start at middle linebacker.
- Zach Stukes started at defensive tackles in place of Goryal Scales.
- Zac Selmon returned to the lineup at tight end for the first time since the North Carolina A&T game.
- Bryan Andrews started at defensive end in place of the injured Jyles Tucker.
Plack Attack...
Ryan Plackemeier's first punt went for 62 yards to put him over 5,000 yards for his career. It also marked Plackemeier's 6th career punt of 60 yards or more and the 33rd of at least 50 yards.
Plack Attack, Part Deux...
After Matt Wisnosky tweaked his knee while making a tackle on the opening kickoff, Plackemeier took over the placekicking duties. He clanged a 37-yard attempt squarely off the right upright. With 6:15 left in the game, he put a 20-yarder through the uprights to tie the game at 10. He was 5-for-7 last season on field goals.
The Kick Is No Good...
Opposing field goal kickers have not had much success against the Deacons. With Brandon Pace's 47-yard miss in the first quarter, opponents have missed six straight field goals and 8-of-12 on the year.
Gattis Gets Involved...
Josh Gattis' forced fumble in the red zone during the second quarter was the third forced fumble of his career. His fumble recovery in the third quarter was his second of the game. He also got a sack in the third quarter, the first of his career.
Barclay Finds Endzone For the 25th Time, Cracks Top Ten In Scoring...
Chris Barclay's one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter was his 25th career rushing touchdown. Barclay is one of just eight juniors in the country to have reached that plateau. Barclay also passed Todd Dixon on the Wake Forest career scoring chart to move into 10th place. He and teammate Matt Wisnosky are jockeying for position in the top 10.
First Half Scoring...
The Deacons scored just seven points in the first half--a season-low. Wake Forest also failed to get the game's first points for the first time this season.
Marion Catches On...
Kevin Marion had four receptions against Virginia Tech for 47 yards, career-highs in both categories. Marion came into the game with three receptions for 23 yards.
Big Game... Big Crowd...
Today's crowd of 32,433 was the tenth largest in Groves Stadium History.
