Winston-Salem, NC - For the third time this year, Wake Forest redshirt freshman linebacker Jonathan Abbate was named ACC Rookie of the Week in a vote by a panel of the league's media on Monday.
The native of Powder Springs, Ga., recorded 17 tackles, including 10 solo stops and seven assisted tackles during Saturday's game against Duke. The 10 solo tackles tied for the most by any ACC player this season. The 17 stops were the most by any Wake Forest player since 2002 and the second most by any ACC player this season.
Abbate was starting just his second career game, his first at outside linebacker in place of the injured Brad White.
Abbate has led the Deacons in tackles in five of Wake Forest's eight games. He has also recorded at least seven tackles in eight of Wake Forest's nine games.
Abbate is the NCAA's leading tackler among freshmen with 77 total tackles, 48 solo and 29 assisted stops.
Wake Forest has had the ACC Rookie of the Week five times this year. Abbate has earned the award three times, Micah Andrews once and Matt Robinson once.
