The Atlantic Coast Conference released the conference games-only portion of the league's football schedule for the 2005 season on Wednesday.
Beginning next season, the ACC will play football aligned into two six-team divisions - Atlantic and Coastal. Teams will play all five opponents in their division, plus one primary crossover opponent every year and two rotating opponents from the opposite division. The divisional champions will meet in the league's inaugural football championship game to be held at the ALLTEL Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla., on Saturday, December 3, 2005.
The primary principles used in determining the 2005 schedule were to fulfill as much as possible the "home-away" situations from the 2004 schedule and eliminate repeat site games from the 2004 season to the 2005 season.
Exact dates and a full official schedule will be released on January 15.
Wake Forest will travel to Boston College, Duke, Florida State and Georgia Tech. The Deacons will host Clemson, Maryland, Miami and NC State at Groves Stadium next fall. In addition, all three of Wake Forest's non-conference games will be played at home. The opponents will be East Carolina, Elon and Vanderbilt.
In 2005, Wake Forest will not play North Carolina, Virginia or Virginia Tech. Wake Forest and North Carolina have met every year since 1943. The absence of Tar Heels on the schedule will end a streak of 61 consecutive years that Wake Forest and North Carolina have met on the gridiron.
