Women's Soccer Earns Ninth Straight NCAA Tournament Berth

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to face University of Alabama-Birmingham in the first round of the NCAA tournament, as announced today on ESPN News, by the Division I Women's Soccer Committee. The tournament berth marks the program's ninth straight at large bid.
Playing an extremely competitive schedule that included nine top-25 teams, the Deacs finished the regular season with a 10-6-2 overall record and a 4-4-1 ACC record, which was good for a fifth place finish in the conference.
Led by junior Sarah Kozey, who has scored 12 goals so far this season, the Deacs will face UAB in the teams first meeting. The Blazers, who earned their first NCAA berth automatically after winning the Conference USA tournament title, enters the tournament with a 15-5-1 overall record.
If the Deacs defeat the Blazers, they will move onto the second round against the winner of the #11 Tennessee/Furman game that will also take place on Friday. Against Tennessee, the Deacs have a 0-2-0 record, with the last meeting in 2002. Against Furman, Wake leads the series, 2-0, with the last meeting in 1995.
The ACC leads all conferences with eight teams in the tournament, including the #1 and #3 seeds. Five teams will represent the Big 12, Big 10 and the Pacific-10; four teams will represent the West Coast Conference.
Twenty-nine conferences were granted automatic bids for the 2004 championship. The remaining 35 teams were selected at-large.
