Wake Forest Agrees to Football Series With Nebraska

Winston-Salem, N.C. - Athletic department officials at Wake Forest and Nebraska have agreed to a two-game football contract that will send the Demon Deacons to Lincoln, Neb., in 2005. The Cornhuskers will travel to Groves Stadium in 2007.
The first game has been scheduled for Sept. 10, 2005 at Nebraska's Memorial Stadium. The Cornhuskers will return the game on Sept. 8, 2007 in Winston-Salem.
"It's exciting for our players and our fans to have the opportunity to compete against one of the truly great football programs in the country," head coach Jim Grobe said. "We're looking forward to playing in Lincoln next year and I think it's pretty cool to have the Cornhuskers coming to Winston-Salem in 2007."
"We are very excited to add Nebraska to our 2005 football schedule, a program of such high caliber," athletic director Ron Wellman said, "and we feel Nebraska is a very attractive addition to our 2007 home schedule. I know our program and our fans will share in the excitement."
The Deacons and Huskers have met once before on the gridiron. That meeting happened on Sept. 12, 1970 in Lincoln when ninth-ranked Nebraska defeated Wake Forest, the eventual ACC Champion, 36-12.
Wake Forest has not played a Big 12 school since the formation of that conference in 1996. However, the Deacons have played 11 games against teams that comprise the league. The last came in 1976 when Wake Forest defeated Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan., 13-0.
Nebraska has not scheduled a regular season game against an ACC opponent since 1973 and has never played an ACC team in a true road game.
Nebraska replaces Elon on Wake Forest's 2005 schedule. Although the complete schedule with dates will not be announced until January 15, the Deacons know they will host East Carolina and Vanderbilt in non-conference action and Clemson, Maryland, Miami and NC State in ACC games. Wake Forest will travel to Boston College, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Nebraska.
