The 10-1 Wake Forest women's basketball team hits the road for the final game of 2004, a match with the University of Kentucky at 7 p.m. on Dec. 30. The Deacs and the Cats will face-off in Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, Ky. in the first meeting between the two programs. Kentucky is 8-4, coming off of a loss at Xavier, while the Deacons are off to one of the best starts in program history and ride a two game winning streak into Lexington.
Wake Forest is paced by juniors Cotelia Bond-Young and Liz Strunk, who over the last two games have combined for 77 of the Deacons' 146 points. Strunk, the leading scorer and rebounder in Tuesday night's 70-50 win against Alabama A&M, averages 14.6 ppg and 6.5 rpg this season. Bond-Young leads the team in scoring at 15.5 ppg and is tied with redshirt sophomore Porsche' Jones in steals this year, 33.
The Wildcat's leading scorer, Sara Potts, who averages 15.6 ppg, scored a team-high 21 points and grabbed the team-best six boards, but it was not enough as Xavier connected on 13 of 24 three point attempts and went on a 12-0 run midway through the second half to hand Kentucky their fourth loss of the season.
The Kentucky game marks the last of 2004, but the Deacons return to the home-state for their first game of the new year and the first game on their conference schedule. Wake Forest faces N. C. State in Raleigh at 6 p.m. on Jan. 3, followed by a home contest with Virginia at 7 p.m. on Jan. 6.
