WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Scott Sealy was named the team's most valuable player, senior Stephen Keel and sophomore Ryan Solle shared the most improved award and senior Amir Lowery earned the Walt Chyzowych Award to highlight the 2004 Wake Forest men's soccer banquet last Wednesday night at the Twin City Chop House.
Sealy, a native of Petit Valley, Trinidad, closed his Wake Forest career as one of the most prolific scorers in Demon Deacon history. He finished second on the career chart for goals (43) and points (108). Sealy also finished in a tie for fourth place on the all-time assists chart with 22. He led Wake Forest in 2004 with 17 goals, 10 assists and 44 points. For his effort, he was named 2004 ACC Offensive Player of the Year and first team All-ACC. Sealy was named All-ACC second team in 2003. An All-American candidate, Sealy was named ACC Player of the Week and Soccer America Team of the Week on two occasions this season.
Lowery, a midfielder from Washington, D.C, earned the Walt Chyzowych Award, which is presented annually to the player who has accomplished outstanding athletic achievement and most impacted his teammates through his hard work, determination and season long effort as selected by head coach Jay Vidovich. Lowery was named second team All-ACC each of the past two seasons. He started every single match over his last three years in a Demon Deacon uniform -- a streak of 62 consecutive starts.
Keel, a midfielder from Littleton, Colo., was a huge asset off the Wake Forest bench his first three years, but excelled this season - his first as a full-time starter. Keel started 20 matches this season and finished third on the squad in scoring with 13 points on four goals and five assists. Keel closed his career with three goals and one assist in the Deacons final six matches, including the gamewinner at Davidson and clincher at North Carolina. Keel finished his Demon Deacon career with 35 points on 13 goals and nine assists.
Solle, a midfielder from Broadway, N.C., played in only 10 games in 2003 and registered just a single assist. He returned in 2004 and put together a breakthrough season. Playing in 19 matches and starting 18, Solle finished with nine assists, which not only were second most on the squad, but also fourth most ever by a Deacon in a single-season.
Wake Forest's eight seniors were also honored in a video tribute. The group, which included Keel, Matt Koh, Lowery, Brent Pridgen, James Riley, Sealy, Ryan Caugherty and Tomy Szczypiorski helped the Deacs to a pair of ACC Regular Season titles and four NCAA Tournament appearances. In all, the group posted a record of 57-18-7 (.738) -- the most victories for any senior class in school history.
