Wake Forest Postgame
February 1, 2004 / vs. Virginia
Virginia Coach Debbie Ryan
On second half comeback:
"I was proud of our team because we weren't on our game and we came out in the second half and stepped up. It takes a lot of character to erase a 15-point deficit. We have been in this situation a lot this year. Today, we weren't shooting the ball well so we decided to come inside more and create more fast break opportunities. It mixed things up well."
On containing Liz Strunk:
"We brought in Anna Prillaman off the bench because she is a great defensive player. Liz had a great first half and a great beginning of the second half, so we had to keep Anna on her."
Virginia forward Brandi Teamer
On her playing time:
"I try to take advantage of the time to work my way back into the starting lineup. It is a tough atmosphere to play in because they have a couple hundred people and I told my team we had to create our own energy."
Virginia guard LaTonya Blue
On the close game:
"We had confidence being in close games because we've been in many this year. We know what it takes to win and everyone stepped it up tonight."
Wake Forest Coach Charlene Curtis
On the game:
"Today's game was kind of tough to swallow. We played well for 30 minutes but we weren't able to fight off the comeback at the end. That was the only lead they had the whole game. Rebounding really came back to bite us. We need to remember that this is only one game and there are lots more in the season. We stopped executing and couldn't stay focused."
On rebounding:
"Their rebounding was huge. We played well but couldn't shut them down. We didn't box out at all today."
On the final play of the game:
"We were just looking to see who could get open. We had an opportunity for a tip in but it just didn't fall. We shouldn't have been in that situation in the first place."
Wake Forest forward Liz Strunk
On the game:
"This was the toughest game all season for us. Our intensity level dropped towards the end. Our box-outs were very weak, myself included. But this is definitely something we will learn from."
