Clemson vs. Wake Forest
February 22, 2004
Wake Forest head coach Charlene Curtis
On today's game:
"We worked for three practices to play against Clemson's zone, but their wingspan and quickness made us play outside. We didn't penetrate. When we played at a faster pace, we were more successful, but when we played in the half-court set, we were not effective on offense."
On Melissa Washington:
"Melissa did what we asked today. She started a little slow this season, but like all freshmen, she has a lot to learn. The intensity and speed of the college game attributes to a slow start for her. In November and December, we told her we needed help in the post and asked her to begin with defense and rebounding before offense. She has been rebounding well and played the most minutes this season."
On attacking Clemson's zone defense: "We tried to overload the zone but they trapped in the short corner. Even when we penetrated and kicked the ball back, we were shooting from the outside. When you don't hit shots outside, the center gets more packed in."
On preparing for Virginia: "We've lost six straight games. We felt we could get back on the winning track today. If the rest of the season is important, then the players will come to practice for the best practice of the year on Tuesday. It is up to the players to dig down and decide how valuable these last games are."
Wake Forest freshman Melissa Washington
On her development as a player:
"I have definitely improved on my rebounding over the course of the season. I really need to improve on finishing around the basket. Overall, I just really need to work on my offense."
On regrouping for the next game at Virginia:
"We really need to get in the mindset of turning things around. It would be real nice to win these next two games going into the ACC Tournament."
Wake Forest senior Tonia Brown
On preparing for Virginia:
"Our mindset needs to change. We're very sick of losing. UVA is a tough place to play. We need to start playing with a sense of urgency and have more heart and fire."
On Senior Day:
"Obviously we wanted to win the game, but overall it was just another game that we needed to win for the team."
