Wake Forest Postgame
February 5, 2004 / vs. NC State

Wake Forest Head Coach Charlene Curtis
On the game:
"We did not execute our offense tonight. State did a nice job of picking up the defense in the second half. We end up with a nine-point lead at halftime, but that was a result of us hitting a few three's right at the end. We've lost our last two games with a lead at the half. And before that, we won two games when we were trailing. We tend to play like we don't need as much energy when we have a lead. We have to learn to play with a nine-point lead. We need to learn to build upon it. We defended a lot better tonight and rebounded a lot better too. Neither team had a lot of shots tonight because everyone was using a lot of the shot clock."

On Tonia Brown:
"It was good to see Tonia hit the 1,000 point clip. We've been searching for consistent scorers since I've been here and she's been able to do it. This year it is an adjustment coming off the bench. She's scored in double figure in four of the last five games. She gives us that spark off the bench. She has really picked up her defense and really gotten consistent on both ends."

Senior Tonia Brown
On her 1,000th career point:
"It's a great accomplishment. Not many players achieve this mark, especially in the ACC. I just have to thank my coaches and teammates as well as thanking God and my parents for the last four years. I wanted to win tonight. You want to win every game, but especially senior night or a night like this. It gives you that special feeling."

On what the team needs to change:
"We need to learn how to keep and stay with a lead. We seem to be more focused and play with greater intensity when we are down, but when we get the lead we have to learn how to keep it."

Sophomore Cotelia Bond-Young
On NC State bringing out the best in her:
"I don't know why I play well against them. Last time I had a hot hand and I had a hot hand again today. I can't really answer the question. I guess I was on."

On Wake Forest's final possession:
"I wasn't as open as I thought. I didn't think Kaayla could block it, but she tipped it. I had to congratulate her after the game. I was thinking of pump-faking, but since I thought I was open, I went ahead and took the shot. I wanted to knock it down."

On how the team regroups after a tough loss:
"You can't sit on a loss and get down. You have to take the good and carry on. Like Phil Jackson said, 'don't let success get to your head and don't let failure get to your heart'. You just have to bounce back."
