Charleston, S.C. - The Wake Forest men's soccer team downed the Charleston Battery 1-0 on Wednesday night in Charleston, S.C. Scott Sealy's game-winner in the 82nd minute was the difference as the Deacons defeated the professional side for the A-League for the second straight year.
"It was an impressive performance against a professional team in one of the nation's best stadiums," 11th year coach Jay Vidovich said. "It provided invaluable experience for some of our younger players to play in that type of environment."
Rising sophomore Brian Edwards played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Deacons and posted the shutout.
The Deacons had an earlier chance to take the lead in the 73rd minute when Tomy Szczypiorski appeared to have scored the game's first goal for Wake Forest. He beat a couple Charleston defenders and the goalkeeper for a goal, but the play was whistled down as offside.
Wake Forest is off to an excellent start in its spring season having defeated the U-17 Aiken (SC) Fire 8-1 and getting a 4-2 victory over American University, both games played on March 27.
The spring schedule continues this Sunday in Morgantown, West Virginia, when the Deacons face the University of Akron. Wake Forest will host Lees-McRae on April 7 before traveling to William & Mary on April 17.
Wake Forest will round out its spring slate with a home date on April 23 against the United State U-17 Men's National Team. Additional details for that game will be released as soon as they become available.
