Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team announced its 2004 schedule on Tuesday. The schedule features 10 teams that qualified for last year's NCAA Tournament, including two matches with NCAA qualifiers' Denver and Colorado at the 2004 Wake Forest adidas Soccer Classic from Sept. 10-12.
"Without a doubt, this is one of the toughest schedules that we have ever faced," said head coach Tony da Luz. "We truly feel that the regular season must prepare you not only for the ACC Tournament, but also the NCAA Tournament."
The home schedule includes Atlantic Coast Conference rivals Duke, Virginia, Maryland, defending National Champion North Carolina and newest league member Miami. The Deacons travel to conference foes' NC State, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Florida State -- 2003 Final Four qualifier. Wake Forest will also head to a tournament to be played the first weekend of September at Charlotte. The Deacs will face Colonial Athletic Association Tournament runner-up Virginia Commonwealth on Sept. 3, then play Mississippi on Sept. 5. The Rebels reached the second round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament.
Wake Forest opens its season on August 27 at SEC foe Vanderbilt. The Deacs make their first appearance at the friendly confines of Spry Stadium with the same team that closed last season -- UNCG on August 30. The Demon Deacons will also host non-conference opponents Davidson and Princeton.
Wake Forest head coach Tony Da Luz will begin his eighth season at the helm of the Demon Deacon women's soccer program. He returns 13 letterwinners and seven starters, including All-ACC second team selection Melanie Schneider and ACC All-Freshmen selection Elizabeth Remy.
The schedule, especially game times, is subject to change. Changes to the schedule will be posted at www.WakeForestSports.com as necessary.
