Brian Carroll, William Hesmer Make Opening Day MLS Rosters

Saturday's nationally-televised game between DC United and San Jose Earthquakes featured the debut of 14-year old phenom Freddy Adu. But Adu wasn't the only DC United player making his MLS regular season debut. Former Wake Forest All-American midfielder Brian Carroll also saw his first action for DC United.
Carroll and former Deacon All-American goalkeeper William Hesmer have made the opening day rosters for their respective squads, as the eighth season of Major League Soccer began on Saturday.
Carroll started and played the full 90 minutes on Saturday for the United in a 2-1 victory. He was picked by the United with the 11th overall pick of the 2002 MLS SuperDraft.
Hesmer, taken by Kansas City with the 17th pick in the 2003 draft, begins his professional career as the back-up Tony Meola, the U.S. National Team goalkeeper in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups.
Kansas City's season opener is Saturday night at Arrowhead Stadium against the Chicago Fire.
Jeremiah White, the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, was drafted by New England but is playing for a club team in Yugoslavia. Kelvin Jones has signed a contract with the Charleston (S.C.) Battery of the A-League.
