Wake Forest, two weeks away from opening the season, went through a spirited but sloppy 90-minute scrimmage at Groves Stadium today. On the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Cory Randolph found Jason Anderson for 25-yard gain which set up a Matt Wisnosky field goal. On the first play of the next series, redshirt freshman quarterback Ben Mauk was looking for Kevin Marion deep over the middle, but was picked off by senior cornerback Eric King. Other highlights from today: Josh Gattis chased Cornelius Birgs down from behind on a long gain and stripped Birgs of the football. The offense recovered and moments later, Birgs carried for a 15-yard touchdown. Mauk hit Nate Morton on a 60-yard bomb before Morton was knocked out at the three. Chris Barclay punched it in for a score. Gattis saw time at kickoff returner along with D'Angelo Bryant. Quoting Head Coach Jim Grobe on the scrimmage: "We were sloppy today. Our guys were tired. We had more missed assignments and more penalties than we had last Wednesday (previous scrimmage). But it's what you expect during two-a-days. When your legs are dead, your brain goes dead. I think the group that is probably the most tired right now is our offensive line. We'll have a chance to get rested up and get guys healed, but right now we still have a lot of work to do." On The Sideline: Junior defensive tackle Cori Stukes, a projected starter, sat out with a hamstring injury. Junior offensive lineman Greg Adkins sat out with a sore ankle. Both players could be back in the mix on Monday. Other players who sat out today: Caron Bracy, Brandon Drumgoole, Johnny Edwards, John Finklea and Jeremy Jones. Players who missed Wednesday's action but played today: Birgs, Jerome Nichols, Randolph and Matt Robinson. Upcoming Practice Schedule: Practice continues Sunday with a single session in the morning, followed Monday by the last two-a-day session of the summer.
