WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The sixth-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team opened the 2004 exhibition season with a 1-0 shutout over Charlotte in college soccer action from Spry Stadium Saturday night.
Senior forward Stephen Keel provided all the scoring the Demon Deacons would need in the 20th minute. Steven Curfman earned a penalty kick after stealing possession from the 49ers defense deep inside the penalty area. Charlotte was forced to foul Curfman. Keel calmly slotted the ensuing penalty shot into the lower left-hand corner.
Wake Forest controlled much of the play, but were not able to breakthrough the Charlotte defense the rest of the night. The Deacs did outshoot the 49ers, 9-4.
The trio of Brian Edwards, Marcus Rein and Paul Slocum kept the shutout intact. Edwards started and played the entire first-half, but was not forced to make a save. Rein, a freshman, made his Wake Forest debut in the second-half and made one save in just over 30 minutes of action. Slocum played the final 14:15 and finished the match between the pipes.
The Deacs' coaching staff was also able to get a look at a number of different combinations as Wake Forest used 24 players on the evening.
The Demon Deacons return to the pitch next Saturday night in their second and final exhibition match. Wake Forest will face Furman on August 28. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
