WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The sixth-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team hosts Furman in its final exhibition match of the 2004 campaign Saturday night at Spry Stadium. Kick-off with the Paladins is scheduled for 6 p.m.
In the victory over the 49ers, senior forward Stephen Keel provided all the scoring the Demon Deacons would need in the 20th minute. Steven Curfman earned a penalty kick after stealing possession from the 49ers defense deep inside the penalty area. Charlotte was forced to foul Curfman. Keel calmly slotted the ensuing penalty shot into the lower left-hand corner.
Furman returns 12 players with starting experience from last year's squad that finished 6-9-4 overall and 3-2-2 in Southern Conference play. Senior goalkeeper Alex Maslow, a first team All-SoCon selection, and senior captain Luke Barbour return to lead a strong Paladin defense in 2004. Barbour, a defender that was recently named preseason All-SoCon, helped anchor a Furman defense which surrendered 26 goals in 19 matches last season. Josh Villalobos, also named preseason All-SoCon, ranked third among all Paladins in 2003 with nine total points. The midfielder scored one goal and tallied seven assists on the season.
Wake Forest opens the regular season at the Ohio State Classic, a round-robin event that features Big 10 foes Ohio State and Penn State over the weekend of September 3-5.
