Deacons Wrap Up Preseason With Groves Stadium Scrimmage:
Wake Forest closed the book on its preseason camp with a two-hour session at Groves Stadium in front of curious on-lookers on Saturday morning. The Deacons worked mostly on a variety of important odds and ends including kickoffs, punts, field goals, free kicks, hail mary situations, red zone offense and defense and even the coin toss. The actual scrimmage portion of the morning was trimmed down to just a few series. Some of the highlights included a successful hail mary touchdown to Jason Anderson from Ben Mauk. Anderson out-battled three defenders for the ball and a clean catch. Mauk and Cory Randolph both worked with the first team offense and both had drives stall because of dropped passes. Defensively, true freshman Kevin Patterson made a great interception near the endzone by stepping in front of tight end Zac Selmon. On special teams, Matt Wisnosky nailed a pair of field goals from 40-plus yards. Head Coach Jim Grobe on Saturday's activities:
"We were inconsistent and I'd say the other two scrimmages were more intense. But, we were working on situational-type things. We were re-spotting the ball quite a bit and that kind of screws up your tempo. But we stayed relatively healthy today, we'll give the guys the day off tomorrow and pick it up again on Monday." On The Sideline:
A number of players sat out of Saturday's scrimmage with minor injuries including Travo Woods, Nate Morton, Marcus McGruder, D'Angelo Bryant, Eric King and John Finklea. At this point, none of the players on the two-deep depth chart would be considered doubtful for next week's game at Clemson. However, starting nose tackle Goryal Scales suffered a back injury during Saturday's scrimmage and will get X-rays and re-evaluated on Monday. Upcoming Practice Schedule: The team has an off day on Sunday and will slide into a regular game week schedule beginning Monday night with an 8:15 p.m. practice.
