WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The sixth-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team wrapped up their exhibition season with a 1-1 draw against Furman in men's college soccer action from Spry Stadium Saturday night. The two coaches decided the match would not continue into overtime.
Demon Deacon senior Scott Sealy broke through a stout Paladin defense in the 74th minute to bring Wake Forest even, 1-1. Junior Justin Moose played a wonderful through ball from just outside the box and Sealy slid the ball under a charging John Hanley into the Furman net.
The Paladins scored first at 49:48 of the second-half. Sean Murray's first shot was blocked, but the rebound took a fortunate bounce right back to him and Murray fired the ricochet past Wake Forest sophomore goalkeeper Brian Edwards.
The Demon Deacons had two golden chances to grab a first-half lead, but both were snuffed out by excellent defensive play on the part of the Paladins. After Sealy was fouled just outside the box, sophomore Stephen Curfman took the ensuing free kick and curled a beautiful ball into the upper near corner, but Furman goalkeeper Alex Manslow made a sprawling save to keep the match scoreless.
Then, just minutes before halftime the Deacs nearly struck again. Curfman whipped in a cross to the back post to freshman Patrick Phelan. Phelan headed the ball back across the six-yard box to senior Tomy Szczypiorski whose header was cleared off the line by a Furman defender.
Wake Forest did outshoot the Paladins, 12-4, and held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Edwards made two saves and allowed one goal in 65:20 in goal for the Demon Deacons, while freshman Marcus Rein was not forced to make a save in 24:40. Manslow and Hanley each made a pair of saves as the two netminders each played a half.
The Demon Deacons return to the pitch next Friday night in their season opening match at the Ohio State Classic against the host Buckeyes. Kickoff with Ohio State is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wake Forest will then face fellow Big Ten foe Penn State on Sunday at noon.
