Winston-Salem, N.C. - Wake Forest junior punter Ryan Plackemeier has been named to the Ray Guy Award watch list, the Greater Augusta Sports Council announced on Thursday. The Ray Guy Award is presented annually to college football's best punter by a national selection committee.
Plackemeier, a 6-foot-4, 235 pound native of Bonsall, Calif., was a first-team All-ACC pick last fall. He led the ACC and ranked sixth nationally in punting with a school season-record average of 45.6 yards per boot. Plackemeier put 11 of his 57 punts inside the 20 yard line and had a long punt of 67 yards.
Coming into the 2004 season, Plackemeier's 44.8 career punting average ranked first all-time at Wake Forest and in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The Ray Guy Award watch list will be narrowed to ten semi-finalists who will be announced in early November. The national voting body will then vote for the three finalists who will be announced in late November. On December 9, 2004, the three finalists will travel to Orlando, Fla., for the Home Depot College Football Awards Show, with the winner being announced and presented with the award live on ESPN.
