Deacons Finish Fifth In First Tournament Of The Season

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. -- Wake Forest freshman Webb Simpson finished tied for third place in his first collegiate tournament and the Demon Deacons placed fifth in the first tournament of the year, the Bank of Tennessee Championship at The Ridges, which concluded today.

Wake Forest shot a 5-over 293 today for a 54-hole total of 7-over 871. The Deacons finished 17 shots behind first-place Tennessee, which was 10-under par for the tournament. TCU (-7) finished second, followed by Clemson (-3) and Oklahoma (+6). Out of six ACC teams in the 15-team field, Wake Forest finished second.

Simpson had an impressive career debut for the Demon Deacons. He shot a three-round total of 211 (5-under par) to finish tied for third with Clemson's Brian Duncan. Simpson was just three shots off the pace set by individual medalist Philip Pettitt of Tennessee (-8) and he was one shot behind second place Anthony Kim (-6) of Oklahoma.

Deacon sophomore Sean Moore shot a 2-under 70 today to finish tied for 20th, 2-over for the tournament. Kyle Reifers shot a three-day 219 (+3), Chris McCartin shot a 223 (+7), and Doug Manchester shot a 233 (+17).

Next up for the Deacons is the Carpet Collegiate Classic in Rocky Face (GA) Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
